Pidurangala Rock, located just a short distance from Sigiriya, is a historic rock formation that offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Sri Lanka. Known for its sunrise hikes, Pidurangala is often considered the best vantage point to admire the majesty of Sigiriya Rock itself.

Overview and Elevation

Rising about 200 meters, Pidurangala is slightly smaller than Sigiriya but equally impressive. The climb takes visitors through an ancient temple, reclining Buddha statues, and a natural rock shelter before opening up to a rugged path that leads to the summit.

Main Attractions at Pidurangala
  • Ancient Cave Temple – At the base lies a Buddhist monastery with ancient murals and statues.
  • Reclining Buddha Statue – A partially restored statue carved into the rock, dating back centuries.
  • Summit Viewpoint – At the top, a wide-open rock surface provides unobstructed views of Sigiriya and the surrounding forests—especially stunning at sunrise.
